Frequently Asked Questions

How often do pools need resurfaced?

In Houston, we generally see plaster last around 10 years, on average. With that said, it largely depends on the quality of the plaster installation, chemical balancing and maintenance over the life of the plaster.

What are the signs that my pool needs resurfaced?

Plaster generally shows clear indications of its aging. Below are some of the common signs of degraded plaster finishes.

  • Staining That Won’t Go Away
  • Flaking or Peeling Plaster
  • Areas of Plaster Erosion
  • Concrete / Gunite is Visible
  • Discoloration of Plaster
  • Rust Spots
  • Cracking of Walls or Floor
  • Pebbles Loose and Dislodging
  • Water Loss

How long does it take to resurface a pool and spa?

The first step is to reach out for a free estimate. Once we take a look, we can generally provide an estimate within 1-2 business days. We can also bring the showroom to you, allowing you to see physical samples of different plaster and tile options.

Once plaster and/or tile selections have been made, we typically can often schedule the remodel within the next week! The preparation and installation generally takes 2-4 days. After the pool is filled, it will take around 7-10 days to rebalance the pool chemistry in a manner that ensures extended life of the plaster.

Do I have to replace the tile as well?

Many customers choose to replace the waterline and accent tiles as a part of the remodeling, however it is not necessary. Old tile can be preserved in most cases, with the exception of “toe tiles” that are embedded in steps or benches, or mosaics that may be embedded in the pool wall or floor. These can be replaced during the replastering process.

We have an endless supply of tile options, including glass, ceramic and natural stones to suit every style. We are happy to consult on designs and provide free tile estimates as a part of the pool resurfacing process.

How soon will the pool be swimmable after finishing the replaster?

Once your pool has been refilled with water, we will immediately begin the start-up process, which generally takes between 7-10 days. In most cases, you’re welcome to enjoy your beautifully finished pool within a few days of completion!

How long does it take to refill my pool with water?

On average, most pools in Houston fill within 24-36 hours. The amount of time required depends on your water pressure, size of the pool, and the size and number of hoses you are using. It’s extremely important to fill continuously and not turn off the water until the pool is entirely filled to avoid possible permanent water lines on the plaster surface. If you have well water, you will likely want to have the fill water transported in by truck – this is not necessary with city water lines.

Is it possible to paint the pool instead of replastering?

We highly recommend that you do NOT paint the surface of your swimming pool! While a painted finish may seem appealing due to its lower cost, it rarely holds up, resulting in chipping, fading and cracking in a short period of time. Additionally, should someone want to resurface that painted pool, it will add thousands of dollars in additional cost to prep the pool before it can be replastered.
